*** HUT KEYS - IMPORTANT *** As you may be aware we have now largely
completed the transition to electronic 'swipe' keys as the preferred
access method to our huts. However, due to some unrelated works, it
has not been yet possible to complete all of the barriers - however
it should now be possible to access all the huts and car parks
without carrying the old, metal keys. A full list of the current
access arrangements, as of 1/11/07 appears below this important
message.
Alternatively, please send a cheque, payable to The Climbers' Club, along with a note listing your name/membership number/key number to:
For further information or if you have any questions, please contact Ian directly (number in the handbook). Current lock status (01 November 2007): The transition to electronic access control in the huts is now largely complete, and we are trialling a solution for the barriers at Ynys Ettys. If this is successful we will introduce it at the Count House and Helyg. As an interim measure, combination locks or other methods have been employed, and the codes/keys kept in a nearby, fob operated safe as is appropriate: Riasg: Downes: Helyg: Ynys Ettws: Cwm Glas: May Cottage: Count House: RLH (Wayfarers) Langdale:
General information: Our huts offer all the facilities required for a comfortable climbing or mountaineering base: bunk beds, kitchen, lounge, showers, toilets and drying rooms. All accommodation is fully mixed between men and women. Recent refurbishment of the RO Downes hut in the Peak District has provided limited facilities for ambulant disabled people. Huts are available to members and guests, and to other parties by prior booking (see restrictions below). Bookings are normally accepted from members of any recognised climbing club, or BMC affiliated organisation. Bookings from schools and organisations involving young people will not be accepted because of legal restrictions. See note about University clubs in the restrictions below. Enquiries are welcome from any other organised adult group with bona fide climbing credentials and familiar hut use. For further information or to enquire about hut bookings, please contact the Hut Bookings Secretary • Ynys Ettws: Members only at weekends and on bank holidays. Others may book the huts midweek. • Helyg, Downes: External parties may only book on alternate weekends; on intervening weekends the hut will be for members only. • Count House: External parties may book outside of the 'closed season'. CC and reciprocal rights club members only during June, July and August. • May Cottage: CC and reciprocal rights club members only at all times. • Riasg: CC members only, 15 November - 1 June. CC, kindred clubs and MC of S, 2 June - 14 November. • Cwm Glas Mawr: CC, reciprocal rights club members and external parties. We are pleased to consider bookings from University Clubs. For details contact the hut bookings secretary (see contacts list). • University clubs: Are currently accepted in Cwm Glas Mawr only. • Guests: At all times and in all huts any members may bring a maximum of three guests unless booked in as an external party. • Booking: It's not essential for members to book, but perhaps worth checking with the Hut Booking Secretary to see if the hut will be crowded during busy times. Also check the newsletter for advance warning of external bookings. • On arrival: Please complete the hut register; leave the Number of Nights column free if necessary. Please remind any other occupants who have forgotten to sign themselves in. • Hut keys: These remain the property of the club. Do not, under any circumstances, loan them to anyone, even another member who has lost his own. If you lose your key, contact the Membership Secretary. • Security: If you're last to leave the hut, even just for a day's cragging, please ensure that ALL doors and windows are securely locked, and the car-park barrier (Ynys, Helyg, Count House) is also locked. As a general rule, the barrier should be locked at all times, even if the hut is occupied. Never loan your key to anyone. When using the Count House, please ensure the burglar alarm is switched on when you vacate, even if only for a short time. • Members only rooms: These are for the EXCLUSIVE use of CC and Wayfarers members. If you've booked space as an external club, you must not occupy space in these rooms. • Custodians: These volunteers are CC members who have shouldered the task of keeping the huts in good order; they are NOT housemaids. • Repairs: If you spot anything that needs repaired, please either contact the hut custodian or leave a note in the Hut Maintenance Book. • Before you leave: Complete the Number Of Nights column in the hut register, and deposit your completed fee envelope, with cheque, in the post-box provided (cheques payable to The Climbers' Club). Dispose of all food, used pillowcases, clean, dry and put away any dirty crockery etc. Even if you're not the last to leave, please make a contribution to the cleaning of the hut, making sure the hut is left as you'd like to find it. If you are last leave, switch off all appliances, remove any food from fridges and leave their doors open, check all windows & doors, and switch off mains electricity. Fees (per person per night, EFFECTIVE FROM 1st JUNE 2006):
LATE FEES: If you forget to pay in the hut, please send cheques (not cash) to the Huts Treasurer. Ynys Ettws (RW Lloyd Hut), Llanberis

SH 624 568 Stunningly located in the heart of the Llanberis Pass and surrounded on all sides by mountains, Ynys Ettws is probably the best-situated hut in Britain. It is within easy walking distance of all the major climbing areas of the Pass.
Notes: In the event of a power failure, see instructions in the hut. Electricity and calor gas cooking. Refuse in wheelie bin at the gate. In no instance should the hot water boiler be adjusted; in the event of a failure please use the designated contact number. Warning Ynys Ettws: Please note a routine check of water quality has indicated that the water filters need attention. Please boil all water before ingestion until further notice. We are addressing the problem and will advise when the issue is resolved. Cwm Glas Mawr is unaffected.

In the heart of the Ogwen Valley with superb views of Tryfan, Helyg is steeped in the history of British climbing. It was the first climbing hut in the UK and was used as a base by the pioneers of British climbing in the 1920's for their early ascents, particularly on LLiwedd and Tryfan. Later it was used as a training base for the 1953 Everest expedition. The Hut is preserved in as near to its original form as possible to retain the authentic atmosphere of those early times. Notes: In the event of an electricity failure, contact the Merseyside and North Wales Electricity Board, and advise the custodian. If the water supply fails, clear the inlet pipe (about 30m northwest of the garage on the other side of the road). Refuse in wheelie bin at the gate.

Located in the woods below Froggatt Edge, The Downes Hut is an ideal base for climbing on the gritstone edges. It is within easy walk of Froggatt Edge itself. Recently, completely refurbished with the aid of a grant from the National Lottery/English Sports Council, this hut now offers comfortable, dry accomodation in the heart of the Peak District and within easy distance of many of the Peak crags, and now has limited facilities for disabled users. Notes: Cooking by calor gas. Refuse should be at the roadside, next to the entrance to the driveway; only refuse in green bags will be collected, and those green bags should not be used for any other purpose. Access to Froggatt crag is via the footpath up the wooded slope directly opposite the hut drive.

SW 422 365 Occupying a superb setting between the road and Bosigran Crag (10 minutes walk), the Count House is a most beautiful granite building. Originally built for a local mine, it is now the only climbing hut in Cornwall. Its situation is perfect for climbing on the North Coast. It has recently had a major refurbishment and now has mains electricity. Notes: THE HUT IS FITTED WITH A BURGLER ALARM; the hut key opens a metal box just inside the door, then follow the instructions inside. Please ensure the alarm is activated when the hut is vacated, even temporarily. Cooking by calor gas. Refuse in wheelie bins at the top of the disused driveway (St Ives end). DANGER: It is dangerous to bathe in Porthmoina Cove and at many other places along the coast, particularly when there is a sea running. Porthmoina Island is designated as a 'sanctuary site', and it requested that climbers respect the voluntary ban and keep off the island.
