*** HUT KEYS - IMPORTANT ***

As you may be aware we have now largely completed the transition to electronic 'swipe' keys as the preferred access method to our huts. However, due to some unrelated works, it has not been yet possible to complete all of the barriers - however it should now be possible to access all the huts and car parks without carrying the old, metal keys. A full list of the current access arrangements, as of 1/11/07 appears below this important message.

This new system offers administrative advantages (lost/stolen keys can be disabled) and economic advantages (no need to replace worn out or damaged locks/keys), but it's also an exercise which is initially expensive, and to recoup some of the cost I'm afraid we have to ask for a £6 contribution for each new key (includes postage). If you haven't done so already, you can purchase an electronic key online as follows:

1) Click on https://www.nochex.com/quicksend
2) Enter the following info:
a) To: membership@climbers-club.co.uk
b) Amount: 6.00
c) Message: Name, Email, Membership no, Key no.
3) click on Continue, enter card & contact details etc, and Make Payment

Alternatively, please send a cheque, payable to The Climbers' Club, along with a note listing your name/membership number/key number to:

Ian Gray (CC Membership Secretary)
23 Castle Road,
Kendal
Cumbria
LA9 7AU

For further information or if you have any questions, please contact Ian directly (number in the handbook).

Current lock status (01 November 2007):

The transition to electronic access control in the huts is now largely complete, and we are trialling a solution for the barriers at Ynys Ettys. If this is successful we will introduce it at the Count House and Helyg. As an interim measure, combination locks or other methods have been employed, and the codes/keys kept in a nearby, fob operated safe as is appropriate:

Riasg:
Fully electronic, no metal key required

Downes:
Fully electronic, no metal key required

Helyg:
Door is electronic, car barrier still requires a metal key. The barrier is fitted with an old style metal lock, the key to which is kept  in an electronic safe on the garage door. The garage is also accessed by the same key. Alternatively your old metal key can be used, if you still have it.

Ynys Ettws:
Door is electronic and the car barrier now has an electronic catch mechanism which is acting as a trial for other barriers. So far it is working, but we want to go through a second winter before committing to this solution, as we have had to change out one lock earlier this year.

Cwm Glas:
Door is electronic and the key for the toilet block is in the hut.  See above for the car barrier.

May Cottage:
Fully electronic, front and rear and no metal key required.

Count House:
Door and alarm-safe are electronic, car barrier is controlled by a combination lock, code is kept in the alarm-safe. No metal key required. Once the requirements for the proposed 'Cornish Hedge' boundary are complete we will address the barrier issue.

RLH (Wayfarers) Langdale:
A new key-box is now fitted and we're working with the Wayfarers towards a solution for the car barriers.

General information:

Our huts offer all the facilities required for a comfortable climbing or mountaineering base: bunk beds, kitchen, lounge, showers, toilets and drying rooms.

All accommodation is fully mixed between men and women.

Recent refurbishment of the RO Downes hut in the Peak District has provided limited facilities for ambulant disabled people.

Huts are available to members and guests, and to other parties by prior booking (see restrictions below).

Bookings are normally accepted from members of any recognised climbing club, or BMC affiliated organisation. Bookings from schools and organisations involving young people will not be accepted because of legal restrictions. See note about University clubs in the restrictions below.

Enquiries are welcome from any other organised adult group with bona fide climbing credentials and  familiar hut use.

For further information or to enquire about hut bookings, please contact the Hut Bookings Secretary

On arrival: Please complete the hut register; leave the Number of Nights column free if necessary. Please remind any other occupants who have forgotten to sign themselves in.

Hut keys: These remain the property of the club. Do not, under any circumstances, loan them to anyone, even another member who has lost his own. If you lose your key, contact the Membership Secretary.

Security: If you're last to leave the hut, even just for a day's cragging, please ensure that ALL doors and windows are securely locked, and the car-park barrier (Ynys, Helyg, Count House) is also locked. As a general rule, the barrier should be locked at all times, even if the hut is occupied. Never loan your key to anyone. When using the Count House, please ensure the burglar alarm is switched on when you vacate, even if only for a short time.

Members only rooms: These are for the EXCLUSIVE use of CC and Wayfarers members. If you've booked space as an external club, you must not occupy space in these rooms.

Custodians: These volunteers are CC members who have shouldered the task of keeping the huts in good order; they are NOT housemaids.

Repairs: If you spot anything that needs repaired, please either contact the hut custodian or leave a note in the Hut Maintenance Book.

Before you leave: Complete the Number Of Nights column in the hut register, and deposit your completed fee envelope, with cheque, in the post-box provided (cheques payable to The Climbers' Club). Dispose of all food, used pillowcases, clean, dry and put away any dirty crockery etc. Even if you're not the last to leave, please make a contribution to the cleaning of the hut, making sure the hut is left as you'd like to find it. If you are last leave, switch off all appliances, remove any food from fridges and leave their doors open, check all windows & doors, and switch off mains electricity.

In the heart of the Ogwen Valley with superb views of Tryfan, Helyg is steeped in the history of British climbing. It was the first climbing hut in the UK and was used as a base by the pioneers of British climbing in the 1920's for their early ascents, particularly on LLiwedd and Tryfan. Later it was used as a training base for the 1953 Everest expedition.

The Hut is preserved in as near to its original form as possible to retain the authentic atmosphere of those early times.
