Is it really worth the hassle?
The following is a letter received recently from one of our
'members posted overseas', which describes his feelings about the club. It
doesn't really need any further explanation...
Dear Mike,
It was a pleasure meeting you and Boris at Helyg last
week while I was there with my guest Chris. I really enjoy getting to know
other CC club members at the huts, as I can guarantee that I'm going to meet an
interesting cross section of society, plus everyone seems united in their common
love of the hills and their conscientous attitude to the huts and their fellow
club members.
I've only been a member since 1999, and in that time have
only been able to visit the huts a handful of times (due to my overseas residency),
so for me the club is still a great source of potential to tap into
when I visit the UK. I wish there was more I could do as an expat member to
support the club's goals at representing the tradition of Britsh rock climbing and
mountaineering and being a leader in motivating and recruiting young people
to foster both an appropriate recreational as well as a conservationist attitude
to the outdoors.
Please let me know if there is something I can do on a
voluntary basis from North Carolina that might help the club. I wish there was
something like the CC over here in the US.
Look forward to seeing you again.
Sincerely,
Tim
