Publication
of early development at Huntsham Crag and Near Hearkening Rock in the 1999 Symonds
Yat guide led promptly to an explosion of exploration of the numerous sandstone
outcrops and boulders throughout the northern sector of the Forest of Dean.
This new guide describes the many hundreds of short climbs and bouldering routes
of between 5 and 12 metres on natural sandstone that in places attains top gritstone
quality.
The guide is the first to appear in the new design by Ian Smith
and is printed in full colour throughout.

Notes about the guide/sample:
1) The green triangles denote routes for which there is enough protection
available to make a rope worthwhile; otherwise the presumption is for soloing.
2) The
British grading system is used throughout, but its application to the solo
routes is carefully tabulated in the main Introduction as a function of technical
difficulty, crux height, and potential landing.
3) Conventional photodiagrams are
not used in the book, as once the correct boulder or outcrop is located
the lines are easy to identify from the descriptions. There are often, though,
real problems in locating and identifying the correct boulder or outcrop, where
many exhibit striking similarities, there are no clear approach paths, or visibility
is obstructed by the steep and wooded slopes. Hence the inclusion of many small
crag identification photos, with or without climbers on them.
