Lundy Update

Update 19-August
Please note that the climbs Box Zawn and Deep Zawn in Jenny’s Cove, as well as the climbs Big Zawn, Grand Falls Zawn and Gannets Front Route, will remain closed until further notice as they are still occupied by protected breeding seabirds.

Please avoid any Kittiwake or Fulmar nests that are outside of these areas and inform the Wardens of any areas which you feel should be closed.

Many thanks to all the climbers who have been letting us know of their seabird close encounters.

Update 10-August
‘Jenny’s Cove is now open, however Big Zawn and Grand Falls Zawn will remain closed. Please avoid any Kittiwake or Fulmar nests that are outside of these areas and inform the Wardens of any areas which you feel should be closed.’

Update 31-July

We have just completed an island survey and will be keeping all climbs in and around around Jenny’s Cove (Needle Rock to the Pyramid), Big Zawn, and Grand Falls Zawn closed until further notice as they are still occupied by protected breeding seabirds.

With three days until the end of the climbing restrictions on Lundy, the many of seabirds have already left the island. However the Guillemots, Fulmars and Puffins are still resident in Jenny’s Cove along with the Kittiwakes which are also still on their nests at Big Zawn and most likely in other zawns. Therefore please be aware that the restrictions in these areas will be extended until they have departed.

Also please note that there have been a number of rockfalls on the west coast as a result of last winter’s exciting weather therefore please see http://www.climbers-club.co.uk/lundy-supplement-2014/ for Paul Harrison’s Climbing supplement which includes details.

We appreciate your support and as always, if you have any queries please feel free to contact me on warden@lundyisland.co.uk.
