Electronic Guidebook Application

The Climbers’ Club electronic guidebook application has launched on iOS. Guidebook coverage is initially available for: Bwlch y Moch, Tremadog; Dinas Gromlech, Llanberis; Idwal Slabs, Ogwen; and – in an exciting collaboration with the FRCCSouth Crag Castle Rock, Eastern Crags. Plus very soon coverage will also be available for Raven Crag, Langdale. Each crag is available as an individual paid download directly from within the App.

Initially the App is available on Apple iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, and – if you fancy taking one to the crag – iPad and iPad Mini. Please note that the App is designed for the smaller iPhone and iPod Touch devices as these are more likely to be taken to the crag.). With support from our customers we will be looking at launching on Android devices in the not too distant future. If the Google platform is important to you get in touch ASAP.

You can access the App Store directly on your iOS device. There’s is no need to ever use iTunes. Look for the App Store icon on the home screen. Or, you may download using iTunes on your PC or Mac and synchronise to your iOS device if you prefer.

Crag Coverage

Crag packages available directly through the App:

Crag packages in preparation:

  • Idwal Slabs Area, Ogwen, North Wales.
  • Shepherds Crag, Borrowdale, Lake District.
  • Bramcrag Quarry, Thirlmere, Lake District.

Please get in touch to help prioritise other crags for conversion to the App format.

Technical Requirements

  • An iPhone 3GS or better; a 4th generation iPod Touch or better; or an iPad 2 or better.
  • An App Store account to buy and download content. The App itself is free direct from the App Store. It comes complete with a sample of Climbers’ Club guidebook information.
  • iOS 6 or better. (It’s free to upgrade so why not go straight to the latest version, the App looks even better running on iOS 7.)

The Future

Back in 1909, with Lliwedd, the Climbers’ Club published the world’s first “pocket size” climbing guidebook. Now in 2013 the Club is perhaps helping to usher in a new era in guidebook publication. Imagine, with your support, in the very close future you could be carrying every route description you’ll ever need on one small device in your shirt pocket! (If you are worried about taking your expensive smartphone on to the crags, perhaps consider picking up a secondhand iPod Touch on eBay for a few quid.)

So, why not get the App and get in touch to help set the priorities for converting printed guidebook content to the App format…

Android app is of interest to me, when the Swanage/Portland guide becomes available.
