Smiler (Dave) Cuthbertson

Very sad news Smiler died late on Thursday 2nd May.

His wife Clare said that the cause of his death was Pneumonia/Lung Cancer. It’s all happened very suddenly – he was climbing 2 weeks ago.

Smiler was a very good climber, a unique character, and an outstanding member of the Climbers’ Club and a Past President. He will be sorely missed.

We offer condolences to Clare, his family, friends and all that knew him.

Following a private cremation next Monday, Smiler’s funeral and burial will take place on Tuesday 14th May 12.30 at Dores Church, Dores by Inverness IV2 6TR.  There will be refreshments and time to reminisce at the Dores Inn afterwards (me thinks a proper Climber’s Wake). Clare and family together with Smiler’s siblings would be delighted to see as many of you as can come. Clare lives right next to the church. Family flowers only.

Clare is happy to receive any enquiries about help with accommodation or anything else.

    The Fhidhleir’s Nose
“I seemed in a sort of trance, following difficult, slabby pitches. On stances, I spent long stretches switching from watching Colin, to looking skywards and hoping to see a finishing line. Endless pitches or so it seemed, went on until eventually I could see the right-hand side of the mountain dipping slowly and sensed we were almost there. However, yet another stance came and went, and I resolutely hadn’t checked my watch, hanging by one strap on my trouser belt. Now I looked, and it had been six hours since starting, yet there had been no time when we weren’t going as fast as we could. Colin was astounded when I told him, but we could sense we were nearly on easier ground”.
