October in the Californian desert with the Alpine Club - POSTPONED

Date: Saturday 10th October 2020 to Saturday 24th October 2020
Venue: Cochise Stronghold / Joshua Tree / NJC

Cochise Stronghold is going to be the first "week" and Joshua Tree the second.

  1. Cochise West: under Vineyard Cove
  2. Cochise East: under Peanut Wall (amazing view down to Tombstone)
  3. Joshua Tree: Probably Black Rocks (official) campground, showers and toilets.

Cochise Stronghold (Arizona) has one of the 10 best routes in North America (says Fred Becky), a 5.6 (HS) called What's My Line? There are also 2 new guidebooks (West+East) describing the accesses and camping options. The campsite is at 5000ft and the best routes nearly 1000ft higher. The Forest Service campsite is small, but there is plenty of wild/free camping, especially on the west side.

Joshua Tree (California) needs no introduction, the selective bouldering guide has 2000 problems, & the selective climbing 3000 routes. New Jack City is about 40 miles NW and provides sports climbing of all grades. Most of the climbing is at 4000ft.

If these are too hot then Big Bear (Holcombe Pinnacles) is also about 40 miles NW of Joshua Tree, the lake is at 6700ft and the climbing at 1000ft higher. Unlimited climbing (mostly sport) at all grades. In winter you can look down on the ski-runs across the lake!

Guidebooks (with the Cordee Codes):
  • CCA538 Cochise East both Tanya Bok
  • CCA537 Cochise West
  • CCA541 Joshua Tree climbing (makes the Gower brick look small) - 3000 routes
  • New Jack City (Robbins Guide) is available on Amazon - when your fingers can't take Jtree Granite anymore, only 1 hour north.
  • If it is still summer Nigel has a Holcomb Valley guide (Big Bear Ski Resort). There is also a new Dec 2019 guide. Holcomb Sky Forest Gold.

The organisers are booked on the BA (AA) LHR=>PHX morning flight on the 10th Oct and back early afternoon on the 24th BA (AA) arriving 25th. NOTE: You will need 2x23KG luggage (camping and climbing). If you are just going to Joshua Tree there are very good deals Gatwick/Heathrow to Las Vegas.

Cars can be organised later, but for Nigel's last USA meet we had 3 x SUV between 7 (SUV needed for the ground clearance).
