Lowstern (Clapham)

Situation: Lowstern is on the B6480 Clapham to Bentham road, a quarter of a mile from the junction with the A65 (Clapham bypass). The cottage is in a small plantation on the south side of the road and is approached through double gates and up a short track. The cottage is in a secluded position in a small wood surrounded by farmland about half a mile from Clapham village, North Yorkshire. It is ideally placed for access to Ingleborough and its caves and potholes, with the other caving areas of Craven are just a short drive away.

CC members can now enjoy much easier access to Lowstern at Clapham in The Yorkshire Dales. Ideally bookings should be made with no less than 48 Hours’ notice but bookings for a weekend may be made up to 9pm on the Thursday evening. Lowstern is well placed for the limestone climbing in the western Yorkshire Dales, Hutton Roof and nearby South Lakeland Limestone crags, the local Gritstone climbing, caving and potholing, the Yorkshire Three Peaks, the eastern Lake District and walking or cycling in the Dales and Forest of Bowland. Both Settle and Ingleton have supermarkets and many pubs and cafés serving meals which are also to be found in Clapham and Austwick (not Mondays).

A code will be issued for a keypad safe located on the wall facing the Hut Door (head-torch required at night), please ensure that you always return the key to the key safe when vacating the hut. Hut use is subject to the normal YRC rules.

Accommodation: There are 16 places (4 plus 12) in two bunk rooms on the first floor. Please note that the 6 bunk room at the top of the stairs is reserved for YRC members at all times. Camping is possible under the trees, campers pay full fees.

Parking:Vehicles may be parked beside the hut. As the farmer requires daily access to the field, it is essential that the track is kept clear at all times.

Low Hall Garth

CC members can now enjoy much easier access to Low Hall Garth situated in Little Langdale. Ideally bookings should be made with no less than 48 Hours’ notice but bookings for a weekend may be made up to 9pm on the Thursday evening. Low Hall Garth is an old farmstead cottage situated above Little Langdale Tarn in a delightful and secluded position. It is owned by the National Trust and leased to the YRC. The Coniston fells can be reached directly from the cottage, as can those around Great Langdale by a rather longer walk across Wrynose Pass.

Accommodation: 15 places in bunks in one dormitory. Three of these places are reserved for members of the YRC at all times. Pillows are provided but please bring your own pillowcases.
Camping is not allowed.

Payment  is normally by bank transfer to the following account; Sort code 53-70-00 Account number 72005688. When paying please put your name as reference for the payment. It would also be helpful if you could send richard.josephy@ntlworld.com an email when you make the transfer explaining which date it refers to. If bank transfers are a problem a cheque can be sent, contact the YRC Huts Secretary for further information. The current rates (2014) are £5.50 per night (CC members) and £10 per night for guests.
