Removal of BT payphones in the Highlands

    BT are intending to remove one third of public phone boxes in Scotland, with around half of these 1500 phones removed from rural areas, many of which are important areas for climbing skiing, outdoor recreation and tourism. BT put stickers in the boxes intimating notice of removal, but if you don’t go to the box you won’t know – till you want to make that vital emergency call…

Through the link below there is a map showing phones targeted for removal in the Highlands, they include Glenmore Lodge, Cairngorm Mountain, Aonach Mor ski area, Glen Nevis hostel, Glenbrittle/Cuillins area and many more. As mobile phone coverage in these areas is generally patchy at best, removing the only dependable method for contacting the emergency services seems inadvisable, to say the least.
