PEAK BMC YOUTH MEET - R.O.DOWNES HUT - 2017

On the weekend of the 24TH - 26th of September there will be a Youth Meet organised under the BMC at the R.O.Downes Hut just below Froggat Edge in the Peak Distict . This is organised for young climbers, under 18, principally who want to make the step from climbing walls to climbing outside on crags but also those who have climbed outside on crags before. The objective of the weekend is to 1) help youngsters to gain experience of climbing outdoors on crags 2) for the youngsters to gain and discuss diffeent techniques of belaying and of rope techniques 3) pass on ideas of new crags 4) to act as a networking weekend to bring together youngsters and adults

The format of the weekend is that young climbers with suitable basic knowledge through to more experienced climbers can apply to go on the meet with indication of their abilities. A group of experienced climbers will be gathered together (minimum of 5 years climbing experience), who are known to the organisers and have been DBS checked (BMC do these free for any volunteers) and these will be linked to the young climbers and take them out onto the crags after taking account of abilities of the young climbers, aspirations and the weather. Climbing is potentially dangerous and safety will be paramount to the weekend – amongst other things all climbs should be well within limits of ability; with avoidance of long traverses and there will be a number of teams climbing together at a crag to keep an eye on each other.

People can arrive from 19.30 on the Friday evening, meet up with who they will be climbing with over the weekend. (saturday and sunday). All youth climbers will be back sunday teatime ready to be picked up by parents or responsible adults.
