Meet Report Culm Meet – June

Happy campers?

Unfortunately the weather was not kind to the large group of climbers and others who assembled in North Devon. Both Saturday and Sunday started dull and damp and did not clear up until later in the day when the tide was already fast coming in (more of that later). Also a lightning strike in May which had removed the end of one of the barns on the campsite / farm and various other impacts were still being seen (loss of card payment system).

However the local climbing highlight – the Vicarage Tea Rooms at Welcome were checked out and the quality of the cream tea is maintained. Later on Saturday advice was sought from a Devon local about the possibility of climbing before the tide came in, Föhn (HS) at Screda Cliff (500m from the camping) was selected and two intrepid members set off up the sea stack as the clouds cleared and the sun came out. But the tide comes across those flat beaches very fast and both Spenser and Val both had some challenging wading, while the team on the landward slab were thrown a top-rope. After much hot tea and some drying out in the sunshine the meet moved to the Hartland Quay Hotel for beer and food, and to make plans for the next day. Unfortunately Sunday had the same weather … maybe in 2018
