Six metres left (looking in) of the ledgy ridge bounding the West side of The 50-Foot Wall is another ledgy ridge. Scramble down this to an area of quartz-marked slabs. Belay at their left (looking in) end, above a very narrow inlet (beware the eponymous waterspouts!).

Descend as for Waterspout Shelf, but continue down to the barnacles (lowmid tide!). Traverse left for 10 metres to reach a wide, square-cut groove; start here.

Pitch descriptions:
4b Climb the groove with interest, to a ledge just below the top. Ignoring the two leaning corners above; traverse out left to the rib, and a pleasant finale.

Scramble awkwardly down the ledgy ridge bounding the West side of The 50-Foot Wall to a line of crozzly footholds above a roof. Move right along these and downwards to a standing position on spikes, just left of the small cave.

Climb up the slab, past the start of Toast, and a recent rockfall scar, to a finish over the block atop the “concrete” chimney.

Start location:
Sixty metres NW of the top of Whispering Wind, a grassy narrowing ridge leads down to an area of obvious, flat, orange-coloured ledges. These ledges form the top of a small, but pleasant buttress rising above a spiky, sloping ledge above high tide level. Access is by a short abseil or down-climbing Original Route (beware the rocking jug near the bottom!).

Pitch descriptions:
Climb the central, rockfall-scarred groove in the front face of the buttress. Little more than a scramble, once the steep start, past the rocking jug is accomplished! A similar line 1 metre right gives Origami Route (9m D Clarke 28.3.12).

Two hundred metres NW of the top of Whispering Wind and below a prominent bunker; a curving grassy ridge leads down to a low headland at the entrance to the narrow beach at New Quay (O S Ref 975 931). Start at the tip of this headland.

Pitch descriptions:
Traverse left for 18 metres to a corner below a left-slanting grey slab. Follow a shallow fault leftwards to a ledge on the left side of the slab; then the slab itself to the top. A fine outing; and maybe the best introduction to Deep Water Soloing around!

Seven metres right of Back to Health is a smooth sheet of rock with a foot shelf running across it near its top. Scramble down the gully immediately left (looking out) of the smooth sheet to a cosy ledge just above high tide level.

Pitch descriptions:
Climb the slick rib on the left for 4 metres; before stepping down to the left to gain the shelf. Foot traverse this leftwards, and at its end, pull up into the slabby grooves and finish up these.

4a Climb up to the left-hand end of the ledge system, as for Painted Head. Move up, then follow the glorious holds leftwards across the wall, only rising slightly, to reach a white corner (on Cut-Throat). Follow this corner and its looser continuation to easier ground.

The name means “Bristol Channel”!

4b Climb the grey wall via the thin crack to a ledge. Go rightwards to the ridge and finish up this. After a reasonable start the route eases to a scramble; but all in a fine position.

From the rock pool below Hercules a small channel leads seawards and quickly opens out into a zawn with an impressive prow on its right wall (looking out). Start on the left side of the zawn (still looking out!).

Pitch descriptions:
Traverse in and gain the corner crack bounding the right side of the prow. Follow this on improving holds to the top.

Take a BIG tide with you and make sure the central pinnacle reef is well covered! !

A traverse of the outer western wall (on the right, looking out) of the zawn. Scramble down to the seaward end of the wall; start here.

Pitch descriptions:
Oscillate rightwards into the zawn, keeping about 4 metres above high tide level. After 15 metres things steepen; move first down, then back upwards to reach a wide groove, which is crossed with commitment. Follow the small ledges down slightly for 3 metres; until the bulges above peter out. Climb up, then rightwards to a large circular hollow in the cliff; which is exited on its right side to easier ground.

Additional info:
The Rocket House was the place in Bosherston where the bodies of sailors washed up on the beach were laid out, pending identification–usually unsuccessful in the 1920s and 30s; before burial in the churchyard marked by the Primroses! The House is now the shop next to Ma Weston’s—enjoy your ice-creams!!

4c Boulder out, or stretch through the smooth wall to reach the break. Hand traverse left and pull up into the crack in the slab. Follow this and the short tower above to the top.

Immediately left of the large ledge at the start of Explorer 1 is a smooth wall rising straight out of the sea (clearly seen from Saddle Head opposite!). The main feature is a break-line crossing the wall at half height. Start at the right side (looking out) of the smooth wall, gained by descending a stepped ramp.

Pitch descriptions:
Step right and oscillate rightwards along the break-line to gain the large ledge at the start of Explorer 1. Pleasant, but beware the side rocks at the start and finish!

The pleasant grassy path leading down to the narrow beach at New Quay start 60 metres inland from the abseil stakes for Trevallen. One hundred and twenty metres down the grassy path the first rock reached on the right is a grey wall rising from a ledge.

Gain the ledge and follow the left rib to the top. Two metres right, the twin, thin cracks are Spidery Cracks (6m S Clarke 23.10.13).

After a further 150 metres down the path the beach is reached. To the left is an overhanging wall, whilst to the right is a series of left-slanting loose zawns. Twelve metres right of the overhanging wall (on the left side of the beach) is a steep wall with an horizontal break at half-height, dividing the lower solid rock from the upper loose rock. Start 3 metres left of the central niche of the wall.

Thirty metres left of Swirl How (looking out) is a small buttress with a prow overlooking a tiny, but frequently turbulent inlet. Start from a small white shelf, below the prow. Gain it by a short abseil or a down-climb (VD).

Launch up the prow using juggy, crozzly holds!

Be wary of the whirling eddy currents which afflict this area; hence the route names!
