Back to Guidebooks

The long-awaited successor to Iain Peters's 1988 guide (out of print since April 1996) was published in June 2000. This covers the popular and mainly conventional climbing at Baggy Point, the adventurous and far from conventional climbing on the Culm Coast (inc. Lower Sharpnose), and the serious adventure climbing on the Atlantic Coast of Cornwall (inc. Tintagel, Pentire, and Carn Gowla). The guide covers a total of well over 1,000 routes, an increase of some 400 on those described in the equivalent sections of the old guide - the climbing on the Exmoor Coast, inland Cornwall, and the Lizard is now described or to be described in other guides. There are new climbs on nearly all of the cliffs, including Baggy Point, and at all grades from V Diff to E9. The guide has modified the conventional star-system by using hollow stars to show first ascensionists' assessments for all unrepeated routes.

The authors are Dave Hope and Brian Wilkinson. The book has 368 pages and contains 42 maps and diagrams, a similar number of colour photos, and a handful of other illustrations. This makes it one of the most lavishly illustrated guidebooks ever published by the Climbers' Club.
