Downes Maintenance Meet 2015

    Coffee Break

  • Although the meet was 1 month later than in previous years we benefited from a longer and brighter day which enabled a willing team to clear the brambles and undergrowth last attacked in 2013.

After the obligatory H& S briefing everybody set off in good spirits to chop & saw, pull & tug and clear up litter which accumulates from the busy road above the hut.

Tea and coffee appeared at regular intervals and we broke for lunch and general chatter at 1.00pm.

This year we were joined by our neighbour Marita who lives directly opposite our access drive. As she is redesigning her garden she was only too pleased to give us lots of native woodland plants and even replanted them for us on the bank at the top of the path.

In addition one stalwart member deserving special mention for service above and beyond is Emma Young, who single handedly attacked the toilet block turning it into a fragrant and gleaming haven. Thanks Emma.

This year the meet was combined with an HMSC committee meeting starting at 4.00pm, so time was available for the workers to get off to the crag for the last of the good weather as a reward for their endeavours. ( Likewise on Sunday a day free for climbing with the weather still holding fair.)

Business over everybody sat down for supper at 7.00pm where the food, the wine and bonhomie flowed freely.

As advertised there was a free prize draw for a 2 day film pass for one person at this year’s Kendal Film Festival. This was won by Richard Ellis.

Although Dennis my fellow custodian was unable to make the meet we all wished him a speedy recovery and he joins with me in thanking everybody who came along. Some regulars and some new faces. A great time had by all.

Last but not least thanks to Gwen for catering throughout the day.

PS: Your Web Manager and other CC Members stayed at the Downes this week and we must add our sincere thanks to the Meet team but also to Rod, Dennis and certainly Gwen who keep the hut and its surrounds in tip-top condition. A pleasure to stay there.

Well done Emma! I noticed how much cleaner the toilet block was when we had our meet there. Thanks to all for your hard work, the hut was looking great.
