Craig Harwood

It is with deep regret that I report the sad news that Craig Harwood was killed in a leader fall at Compass Point yesterday (04/09/14).

A full obituary will be published in the future, but for members of the club who did not know Craig well here is some background.

Craig had been a member of the Climbers’ Club since 1993; he served on the HMSC (Huts Management Sub Committee) for 8 years between 1995 and 2003 as well as serving on the main committee between 1999 and 2003. Craig was the main architect for the redesign and major improvements to the Count House, the purchase & conversion of Riasg; he was also involved in many improvements made to Ynys Ettws over the years.

As well as Craig’s involvement with the Club’s huts over the years he also attended many club meets. He regularly helped out on the aspirant’s meets and the lucky or unlucky aspirant, depending on your point of view, was always treated to a full days climbing often involving some off the beaten track esoteirica. Craig was also involved with the popular family meet held at the Count House every summer and at various times over the years acted as meet leader / co-ordinator.

In addition to the work Craig did for the Climbers’ Club he had also taken on the role of chairing the BMC’s Huts Committee…

On a personal level, I have known Craig for around 20 years. I first came across him when I started going out on the Tuesday Nighters; an informal bunch of Peak based climbers – Craig was a Stalwart of this group and often won the ‘end-of-term’ award for best attendance each year.

All who knew him will sadly miss him and our condolences go out to his partner Janet & her children Grace & Lydia.
