When you reach the crux of a trad climb or you are running out of steam, the natural response is stress. This response is generally subconscious (you don’t decide that your leg will shake, to freeze, or to overgrip). In order to replace these responses with desirable ones (such as looking for resting positions, turning up the intensity to power through a section, or relaxing) you need practise these techniques away from distractions, so they become natural. Trad climbing is not all about shuffling along ledges – training stamina and strength are useful for those who want to gain meaningful experiences from either pushing themselves or feeling confident trad climbing.
