Venue: Ynys Ettws, Llanberis, North Wales

BMC NORTH WALES MEET, YNYS ETTWS - 2016

On the weekend of the 10TH & 11th of September there will be a Youth Meet organised under the BMC at the Ynys Ettws Hut in the Llanberis Pass in North Wales. This is organised for young climbers, under 18, principally who want to make the step from climbing walls to climbing outside on crags but also those who have climbed outside on crags before. This is also a good chance to enjoy North Wales, staying at one of the climbing huts owned by the Climbers Club and meet other climbers both young and old.

A series of similar meets has previously been held at the Rawhead Hut in the Lake District from 1999 to 2005 in conjunction with the FRCC. Thanks to Ron Kenyon this meet occurred again in 2015 and will be running again this summer. The idea for the youth meets originally came out of a Lakes Area meeting of the BMC to help young climbers make the move from climbing walls onto the crags and over the six years brought together many for some fantastic days on the crags and mountains around the Central Lakes.

The format of the weekend is that young climbers with suitable basic knowledge through to more experienced climbers can apply to go on the meet with indication of their abilities. A group of experienced climbers will be gathered together (minimum of 5 years climbing experience), who are known to the organisers and have been DBS checked (BMC do these free for any volunteers) and these will be linked to the young climbers and take them out onto the crags after taking account of abilities of the young climbers, aspirations and the weather. Climbing is potentially dangerous and safety will be paramount to the weekend – amongst other things all climbs should be well within limits of ability; with avoidance of long traverses and there will be a number of teams climbing together at a crag to keep an eye on each other.

People can arrive from 19.30 on the Friday evening, meet up with who they will be climbing with over the weekend. Saturday morning James Mchaffie will offer a short belay workshop for those attending before people head off to the cliffs. Food will be supplied on the Saturday night and an evening talk will be given by a famous climber (yet to be sourced). Sunday will involve more cragging with youths expected back by 16.00 to be picked up by parents or guardians soon after. Full details ...
