It’s only petite but I like it. There’s 60 walks described and these are classified into 7 main areas for clarity. There’s an overall map, a map for each area and a map for each walk. Each walk, plus essential facts, is on a double page spread which includes walk map and description and up to 3 photographs. Taken throughout the seasons all the photographs are top notch (surely not digital Bernard?), they show both the location and the detail of the walk. The photography is a considerable and accomplished piece of work in itself. Some images, like ‘On High Street’ illustrating the “Eastern Fells’ introduction, are stunning and to be honest it’s worth splashing out the cover price just for the photography alone. Of the walks themselves, it’s a good selection and there are a few pleasant deviations from standard to add further interest. Each walk description is preceded by an overall introduction to the area and walk and this is evocatively done, besides being usefully informative it captures the spirit of the area. The walk description itself is, by decree of the format, condensed into few short paragraphs and although pretty clear I would recommend also carrying a larger scale map, OS or Harveys.
