UPDATE - AUTUMN-2011

Review of Access Issues
Access is becoming a serious issue for climbers - click to see a review of the current changing position

BMC - Late Summer Update
Of immediate interest is ACCESS to Mowing Word where ALL access restrictions have been lifted; and the BMC IINTERNATIONAL WINTER MEET 2012 will be held in the Cairngorms 22-29 Jan 2012. HOSTS are needed, including middle grade climbers; the link to apply is http://thebmc.co.uk/Feature.aspx?id=2743

2020 Olympics
An interesting development is the application by the IFSC (International Sport Climbing Body) to have climbing on artificial structures using bolts listed as an Olympic sport for the 2020 Olympics. The BMC believes that it should become pro-actively involved in this matter as it throws a spotlight on climbing.

Industrialisation of Upland Areas
Through Area meetings, members have been asked for their views on upland development, particularly with reference to wind farms. The outcome is that development should be viewed on a case by case basis, but that the BMC should consider developing a more considered policy in connection with industrialisation of those upland areas that we value most, Snowdonia, Moorland areas, and the Lakes.

Nick Bullock has written a thought provoking piece in Summit 63 (Autumn 2011) about 'commercialisation' of the Greater Ranges, and the impact this could have on unsupported, alpine-style climbing in those areas. He also discusses the ethics of this commercial approach, and the regression to 1970's style that he believes has occurred in order to get any fee payer to the chosen summit.

There are serious threats to our assumption of access to crags that have been climbed upon for many years, for instance Chee Tor is at risk. I will be writing more on this matter in the next Newsletter, but if you are interested in knowing more, further information can be gathered from the BMC website, or by contacting your Area CC rep.

BMC - Winter Ethics Debate

The Winter Ethics Debate is scheduled to take place on November 30th at the Hawkshead Brewery Staveley; food will be available from 20:00 with the debate starting at 20:30. The debate will follow the BMC Lakes Area AGM which takes place between 19:00 and 20:00.

At present we are arranging speakers, but preliminary arrangements have been made with Andy Turner, and we hope that Steve Ashworth, Dave Birkett and Brian Davison will speak. Nick Colton will be in the Chair keeping things moving.
