BMC Rebranding – Engagement with Clubs -Update Aug 5

BMC re-branding, update 5th August

The CC will be represented at the meeting the BMC are setting up with clubs for the 6th September. We do not have any details of the timing, venue, or agenda. To make the best use of this opportunity I want to establish what the CC memberships’ views are on the rebranding the BMC, also the proposed name and logo. The details will be in the newsletter, which is due out next week, together with a short online questionnaire. I hope this will give us evidence of the CC memberships’ views to take to the meeting. The Club is one one the few large organisations representing the views of ‘trad’ climbers, and I want to make sure our voice is heard.

The message from Dave Turnbull, the BMC CEO, explains the situation. We are all members of the BMC and have the right to vote at our local area meetings. If you want to have your voice heard, attend your local meeting, have your say and vote. The meetings’ dates and locations are on the BMC website, follow the link in Dave’s message.

Vic Odell, Secretary

Following my email of earlier this week I am writing to draw your attention to the update article as posted on the BMC website yesterday.

There has been a strong reaction to the idea of rebranding the BMC and we have now announced there will be a period of discussion and feedback in advance of the next BMC National Council meeting on 17 September.

The next BMC Area Meetings take place between 1-14 September and each meeting will be attended by one or more members of our Board of Directors (I will be attending at least six) who will explain the rebranding process and take questions. Most of the dates are already established (see: dates …) but do keep an eye out for changes and updates. It would be great if you could encourage Climbers’ Club members to attend these meetings and contribute to the debate.

The BMC also intends to hold a meeting specifically for club officials on Tuesday 6 September at a location to be fixed once we know where the demand is coming from.

With thanks

Best regards.

Dave Turnbull
Chief Executive – British Mountaineering Council

I attended the last SW area meeting in Cornwall in July. At the meeting, not a word was said about this and it was not on the agenda.

All well and good to say “come along and get engaged” but what’s the point when stuff like this can be attempted without any prior consultation or notification at area meetings?

I’m not sure I really give a toss about the name one way or the other: I do give a toss about proper process.

Remember Consignia? Remember British Airways aircraft tail fins? Best brand images in the business ditched in favour of some ‘modern’ nonsense. They cost loads of money and didn’t last long. Hopefully the BMC’s silly idea will sink the same way.
By the way, how does just changing the name “create exciting opportunities” as mentioned in the original email we all received?
