An Ascent of the Salathé Wall, El Capitan

This is a film of the third ascent of the Salathé Wall in May 1966 filmed by the climbers, Richard Long, Steve Roper and Allen Steck. The second ascent was done by the first ascensionists, so this was, in effect, a second ascent. The original footage had no sound, so Steck and Roper narrate a voice-over recorded recently in Steck’s kitchen, where a copy was given to Terry Gifford with permission for a screening at the CC annual dinner 2015 (see his ‘Lunch with Steck and Roper’ in July Climber). This is a restored and digitised dvd version. 50 mins.

Remembering Gasherbrum I

This is recently edited footage taken in 1958 with a commentary by Bob Swift of the only first ascent of a Himalayan 8000m peak on which a movie camera was taken to the summit and the only first ascent of an 8000m peak achieved by Americans. This peak is also known as Hidden Peak and K5 and was the subject of expedition leader Nick Clinch’s book, A Walk in the Sky: Climbing Hidden Peak (1982). Bob Swift, now 84, will fly over, at his own expense, only to present to us his film, which was shown at Graz in 2011, but rejected by Kendal. In 1954 Bob climbed with Warren Harding the first ascent of East Buttress, Middle Cathedral Rock, Yosemite and in 1956 he was with Harding on the first ascent of Promulgated Pinnacle, Sentinel Rock, Yosemite. Bob will be accompanied, at their own expense, by two assistants – former pupils of his at Half Moon Bay High School: Jan (Janet), a climber, former tug boat captain in San Francisco and a roadie for Joan Baez, and Larry Giacomino, friend of the late Derek Walker and climbing partner of Don Whillans in the USA. Larry will be donating to Mountain Heritage Trust his slides of Whillans climbing in the USA. 50 mins.
